Rural Resident Eligibility for the Broadband Recovery Act
The U.S. Government gave a boost to the economy through the 2011 Recovery Act Program. One of the many projects is the Broadband Initiatives Program, which let’s some rural residents subscribe to satellite Internet at a reduced price.
For those that are eligible, they get reduced monthly fees, free equipment leasing and installation, plus a number of other benefits. One of the best features of the program is that the monthly fee remains the same for as long as the individual subscribes.
Will the Broadband Initiative Program have any impact on you?
While the government’s effort to stimulate the economy in rural areas is greatly welcome, some rural residents are finding that they don’t qualify for the Broadband Initiative Program. The government and satellite Internet ISPs have limited resources, which means restrictions had to be put in place.
The Internet Recovery Act is available to you if you do not
*Currently have a satellite Internet account
*Have previously subscribed to rural satellite Internet
*Have wireline broadband (from phone or cable company) available to you
*Live in a rural community where the Dept. of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service or Dept. of Commerce’s National Telecommunications Information Administration has issued a loan or grant program.
For eligibility under the Broadband Recovery Act you must
*Reside in a rural area (as designated by the government)
*Use dial-up Internet to get online
*Pass a credit check (unless you live in Vermont)
*Commit to a 12-month satellite Internet contract
Each region is served by a different satellite Internet ISP
Normally, you get to pick which satellite Internet ISP you want to go with. However, if you want to take advantage of the pricing under the Broadband Initiative Program, you may not have a choice. The government established zones for each of the satellite Internet providers. To know if you are eligible, contact a satellite Internet ISP.
